Lunch is an important part of the day but with more than half of children taking a packed lunch to school, it’s no denying that most of us, mommies can’t offer them a healthy food for lunch. It’s very tempting to fall into the trap of using packaged, ready-made options that are high in fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar.
It’s really tough to find healthy lunch box ideas and snacks in this generation for your kids. But the good news is, more and more grocery stores are offering a wide-range of organic food that are easy to prepare, tasty and kid-friendly too.
We are already aware of the benefits of organic food compared to conventional ones. To name a few are the antioxidant capacity, pesticide reduction, heart health, antibiotic resistance, better taste, environmental safety, animal welfare and more. Though there is a small amount of evidence to show that organic food is better in quality than conventional food, it’s better to be sure and we don’t want to worry so much about our child’s overall health. Who says preparing for a healthy food for lunch is difficult? With a little planning and creativity, you can create healthy yummy school lunches and snacks with the uncountable organic foods available right at your local grocers.
1. Wrap foods are great for kids because they are highly customizable. Whether it is a whole wheat or a vegetable tortilla, you can always add loads of fresh vegetables and healthy greens like organic fresh herb. Add organic grape tomatoes, carrot peels, chopped celery and sweet corn plus a yummy dip that can make your kid’s lunch perfect! Think of it as a salad rolled up into a sandwich. What could be better for you than that?
2. Make a frozen fruit salad that will naturally thaw by lunch time. Include organic frozen fruits like frozen organic blackberries, dark sweet cherries, strawberries and raspberries. You may also add a tablespoon of 100% pure maple syrup for a healthy sweetener rather than a processed corn syrup.
3. A great way to add extra fruit and vegetable servings to your child’s meal is by adding a muffin. Yes, you can pack almost any type of organic fruit inside a muffin and many organic vegetables too. And when you can make a couple of muffins for an appetizer, it’s a great thing!
4. Pick your own cup of soup. To ensure that you have a soup ready to go on school mornings, you can make large batches of your favorite soup the night before and store them inside a jar and put inside the refrigerator. Heat it up during morning and put it in your kid’s thermos.
5. Don’t forget to prepare a healthy organic beverage for your kids. Why not fill up thermoses with organic milk or organic soy milk. You can also prepare different organic fruit drinks such as blueberry, pomegranate, cranberry or apple juice.
